Well, as the old saying goes - you can neither choose your parents nor your boss. So, do you need to live with disagreements, misunderstandings and the feeling of being neglected ? The good news is that the answers to these questions rest with you. And you just need to unwrap the answers.
So let’s delve into how does one build a rapport with his or her immediate manager. Here are five Tips to help you build a lasting and impactful relationship with your boss.
1. Place your boss’ official goals, above yours. Yes, you heard me right - Sometimes you fall in love with your job and focus so much on your accomplishments that you may go beyond what is required. As positive as it may seem to you it may not necessarily impress the boss as it could be relating to something that is not a priority at that point of time. One thing to note is that goals are always designed to align across the organisation-from the CEO to every employee. Hence fulfilling your boss’ goals would mean that you have addressed your goals as well.
2. Work to make your boss succeed in his endeavours and automatically you will succeed. If the reports you generate, the tasks that you accomplish, or the orders that you win - make your boss proud, happy and successful, then you have hit the golden buzzer. Make no mistake that I am suggesting that you break the boundaries of work ethics to please the boss. My recommendation is that you work closely with the boss to find out more on his objectives and that of the organisation.
3. Present solutions to your boss not problems. In the modern era where information, tips and techniques are easily available from the net, bosses take it for granted that you can wade through troubled waters. So it’s always good to avoid reverting to your manager only when there is a problem but instead share with him positive outcomes that you expect from a given tough situation. So present multiple options. Lastly, beware that in the event you do share problems with him, then the least that you can do is to refrain from calling them problems and instead address them as challenges and then try resolving it.
4. Don’t ever surprise him even if it is good news. I once met a person who said his boss hadn’t even given him a compliment, let alone an award nomination for the big business order he won. On asking him whether his boss was aware of the order in the making and he said ‘No’. That’s the issue - while the whole world knows the good news, your boss gets to know last !! This could be a disaster.
5. Communicate, communicate and communicate. Yes, communication is the foundation to building a relationship with your boss and to enjoy trust and confidence. Keeping him posted of all your activities will surely bridge the communication gap.
So here we are with 5 simple and easy tips for you to build an impacting relationship with your boss. I wish you all the success in your career and just remember that sooner than later you too would be a boss !!
