A question always arises when one looks up to fresh talent, especially in a competitive environment, whether it is worth embarking on a talent hunt for Freshers or to go with experienced people on the job. In reality, except for the experience garnered from Technical skills - which one may have learned over the years, everything else remains the same for an experienced hand or a Fresher.
The expectations of the corporate world can be easily met by Freshers, especially the ones who are confident and positive. The top 5 attributes that contribute to this success is elucidated below.
Passion:
If one were to delve in to what are expectations from future employers, the first attribute that would be unanimously there at the top of the list - passion. Passion for your job, your organization and most importantly passion for all that you do and learn at the work place. In these days where attrition rates are hovering around the 20th percentile, it is imperative to have an engaged workforce, who are not just loyal. Organisations look forward to positive people who would want to go that extra distance to learn their roles quickly and adapt to that changed environment from Campus to Corporate. It is this passion that differentiates the ones who want to stay the course versus the others who feel like they have just begun their aimless marathon.
Drive:
Positivity breeds positivity! Organisations of today are faced with competition in many areas – direct and indirect. Human resources or people are the only differentiator that can quickly get them to reach their goals, put their strategies into perspective and reach for greater heights. The Market is the same, the equipment may be the same, the techniques may be the same, but the people who drive those strategic plans are the ones that make a mark. Hence it is important to have all employees including Freshers, to have that drive – a positive feeling in them to reach their end-results, which would also help the organization reach its goals.
Networking:
This modern technique of socializing or networking stems from the interest that both young and old show in today’s world. A time will come soon where people would begin to call each other by their Login names like one’s school days where students lost their names to roll numbers. As naïve as it may seem, this is one of the fastest ways of reaching out not just to friends but customers as well. Organisations look forward to this quality in Freshers, whereby they can shake off that shy tag and embrace a new environment quickly. Good networking people are dubbed to get their work done quicker than loners. This is mainly due to the fact that they can easily fit into the corporate environment easier than the others because of their extrovert demeanor. They are generally not ashamed of making a mistake, but instead they would publically seek help. A small word of caution though – be sensitive to what you can network for and whom you can network with.
Eagerness to Learn:
When looking for passionate people, organisations welcome Freshers who have in their student life shown that eagerness to learn. They also look for prior college experiences which would demonstrate their willingness to learn despite having setbacks, if any. As one would say that ‘success is how high you bounce after hitting the bottom’. As a Fresher the Organisation would wish for them, to learn from their mistakes and take their learning to the next level. Often, this change in environment of not much fun but work could lead to failure if it is not well taken care of. Also, Employers wish to see in their employees a sense of inquisitiveness – one of enquiring, one of curiosity and one of innovation. Results are never guaranteed to a person who stays still.
Being Modest:
This is the greatest attribute an employer would like to see in a Fresher. Being grounded all the time will make them grow in knowledge. All great leaders have always had humble beginnings. Great entrepreneurs started their businesses small before turning into giant conglomerates. Money follows knowledge and not the other way. If this is understood, a Fresher can move up the ladder faster than anyone can anticipate. Make no mistake of interchanging modesty with submissiveness. One needs to exhibit his or her talent in a refined way and not flaunt it with arrogance.
As more and more of Engineering and Management Institutions mushroom in India and across the globe, we would find volumes go up and so would competition. So, as a Fresher, if you were to stay the course and wished for long stints in an organization, while growing with them, you would need an interest in the products or services that that organization offers. From that interest will stem passion and from passion to a good performance and from performance to being thoroughly successful – That is what Organisations want!
